Role: Assault/Ambush
The previous pistol, while fine and dandy, lacked power. It didn't have enough range, power, speed, reliability, etc. I needed something with more of all of the above without a significant increase in size or weight.
This incarnation has a longer ammo pull (27cm), and more importantly, is designed around firing much larger and heavier bands. It is surprisingly tough despite using minimal parts and has a safe ammo capacity of about 12 rounds. Its centre of gravity is conveniently paced just above the grip which allows it to be comfortably (and accurately!) fired with one hand. Effective range is about 7-8 metres, tends to dip a little when the bands get old.
The secondary fire mode switches the gun from a rather reliable single-shot to automatic mode, where it chews up its ammo in the blink of an eye. Rather too fast for my taste, but I cannot slow down the rate of fire without jeopardising the reliability of the single-shot mode.
NOTE: Removing one intentionally modular part replaces full-automatic mode with the one-shot-fires-all shotgun feature as seen in the previous pistol. This is a pity; nobody wants to use up all their ammo on one target; but this small alteration also makes the single-shot much, much more responsive. I daresay I actually prefer a better single-shot to having a proper full-automatic mode.
As you can see in the bottom-left image, the original trigger mechanism was far more complicated and looked like a bunch of interlocking caterpillar legs. This has since been replaced with a system which, while less curious-looking, has also proven to jam less often, hell, almost never.
